Krause Gateway Center - Building a Website As Stunning As the Building That Inspired It

When one of the world’s leading architects designs a stunning building that is an instant focal point for downtown Des Moines — how do you design a website that does it justice?

When Applied Art was approached to design a new website for the Krause Gateway Center, we had one thing in mind: How can we create a website that reflects the look and feel of the structure itself? A few of Krause Gateway Center’s many unique features include: natural abundant light, collaborative work environments, a rooftop garden and an art collection.

To get started, our team visited the site and examined all renderings of the building to better understand the space while it was still under construction. Our guiding principles as we began the design process were as follows:

  • Simplicity
  • Elegance
  • Functionality

We incorporated clean white backgrounds to match the building’s open, airy aesthetic. Grey and black text throughout allow the images to speak for themselves and reflect the headquarters’ natural colors.

While the building itself is not open to the public, the website effectively highlights the headquarters’ unique space via the photo gallery page, allowing users to “tour” the space through vivid imagery.

Furthering the website’s composition, our designer developed a custom site menu to match the original “napkin sketch” of the building, one of the original sketches architect Renzo Piano created for the space. When a user clicks on the menu, the building mast is added as the menu expands.

The Krause Gateway Center, headquarters to the Krause Group of businesses, was designed by Renzo Piano, world-renowned architect and winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. It is located in downtown Des Moines, Iowa and opened its doors to employees in late 2018.
